How we work

### What is an embedded design team? Six things the model means in practice

#### Acts like in-house

Your tools, your rituals, your roadmap. The designer works inside them, not alongside them.
- In your workflow
- Full context

#### Design ownership

Product design is the core. Brand, web and any other design question lands with one team.
- Product design
- Brand & web

#### Support, not replacement

No designer in the team? We become the department. Already have one? We add capacity or depth.
- With your team
- Extra capacity

#### No context switching

One designer, one product, full time. No shared hours, no queue behind three other clients.
- Full time
- Direct comms

#### Predictable pricing

A fixed monthly fee, priced like a salary. Scope changes get agreed on the call, not in an annex.
- Fixed monthly fee
- No surprises

#### Product thinking first

Proposals from your users, data and stakeholders, not only tickets from the backlog.
- Proposals
- Data-led

Who it's for

### Who an embedded design team is for

Embedded fits when
- You are a scale-up or larger, with a product already in users' hands.
- You need a senior designer to own product design, whether or not you already have designers.
- There is steady design work, enough to keep someone busy full time.
- The product is complex or moves fast, so context should stay, not be re-explained each time.
- Hiring in-house would take months, and the work cannot wait.

Another model fits when
- You are still deciding what the product is. Start with MVP design.
- You have one fixed scope, like a launch or redesign. A project sprint fits better.
- Design work comes in bursts, not every week. Fractional support fits better.
- You have a strong in-house team and want an outside read, not more hands. Start with a UX audit

Our process

### How an embedded design team works

1. Before start
We assemble the team and adopt your workflow before touching the product

- A designer, a design director and a PM on our side.
- Key stakeholders on yours, chosen with you, often CEO or CPO.
- Dev team and support included, because they hold the edge cases.
- Your rituals, your tools, your review process. We adopt them.

2. Onboarding
Onboarding takes 2 days to 2 weeks with a discovery phase in parallel

- Stakeholder workshops to get the goals stated out loud.
- Analytics and session recordings before any opinions.
- User feedback and competitor best practices, side by side.
- What has been tried already, and why it did not work.

3. Execution
We propose solutions, then design in Figma or with AI

- Solutions come from discovery. Your roadmap is one option.
- Iteration in Claude Code or Cursor when a prototype says more.
- Figma or AI-first design, matched to how your team builds.
- Prototypes tested and reworked before they hit your dev plan.

4. Delivery
Delivery follows your dev plan, weekly or monthly

- Updates 1-2 times a week with delivery weekly or monthly, whichever you run on.
- Figma files, specs or Claude artifacts your engineers can read.
- The design director reviews before anything reaches your team.
- Priorities can change mid-sprint without a new agreement.

Your team

### Three people on your product

#### An AI-native product designer

Picked for your industry, niche and problem. Owns the design work day to day, full time inside your team.

#### A design director

Reviews every screen, owns design quality and direction, and brings product strategy from 56+ products.

#### A product manager

Owns scope, priorities and timelines, and keeps the design work tied to your business outcomes.

Embedded vs hiring

### How does Other Land compare to an in-house hire or a freelancer?

An embedded team from Other Land starts fastest and comes with a design director reviewing the work. An in-house hire builds the deepest context over years. A freelancer starts in days but begins cold on every task.

### Embedded design team questions, answered

#### What is an embedded design team?

An embedded design team is an AI-native product designer from Other Land who joins your product team full time, with a design director and a product manager reviewing the work. The designer works in your tools and rituals and stays on one product, so context is held rather than re-explained.

#### What do you need from us in the first days?

Less than most teams expect, but three things are not optional. Access to the product and to your analytics, including session recordings if you have them. One person who can answer a question without a meeting being scheduled. And a shared view of the two or three things that matter most this quarter, even if that view is rough.
Beyond that we ask for two to four hours of stakeholder time in the first week, usually as a workshop with whoever owns the product, and an introduction to your dev team so the designer understands what is cheap and what is expensive to build. We do not need documentation written for us. If your context lives in Slack threads and half-finished Figma files, that is normal and we will read it.

#### What is the minimum commitment, and how do we stop?

Four weeks is the shortest engagement Other Land takes. That covers one scoped piece of work and gives both sides a read on whether the model works, though onboarding takes a real share of it, so most teams book longer. After the first four weeks it continues month to month for as long as it is useful, with no fixed end date and no renewal negotiation.
To stop, tell us two weeks in advance. There is no exit fee, no minimum remaining term, and no penalty for stopping earlier than you planned. The designer finishes what is in flight, hands over files and specifications in your format, and writes down the open decisions so nothing has to be reconstructed later. Our longest partnership on this model ran four years, one month at a time.

#### What if the designer turns out not to be the right fit?

We replace them within a week and re-onboard the new designer at our own cost, not yours. This is the risk you carry with any hire, and it is the one part of hiring that Other Land can genuinely take off your side of the table.
It rarely gets that far, because the design director and the PM are in the work from the first week, so a mismatch of level, domain or communication style usually surfaces internally before it becomes your problem. If it does reach you, say it early rather than politely. A fit problem named in week two costs a week. The same problem raised in month four has already cost you a quarter of roadmap.

#### Who else works on an embedded design team?

A design director and a product manager, included in the fee rather than billed on top. The design director reviews the work weekly, sets the quality bar, and is the person who says the uncomfortable thing when a direction is not working. The product manager keeps the engagement aligned with your priorities, handles scope conversations, and makes sure the designer is not quietly blocked.
In hours that is roughly two to four hours a week each, and it scales up when a decision is large or a deadline is close. This is the actual difference between an embedded team and staffing a seat. A single freelancer, and often a single in-house designer, has no design directorership checking the work at all.

#### Is an embedded designer cheaper than an in-house hire?

Per month, usually yes. Over the first year, usually no, and the honest answer depends on your market. There is no recruitment fee, no equity, no severance, no hardware, no benefits, and no two to four months of salary paid while someone ramps up or while the role sits empty. A senior hire who does not work out is the expensive outcome, and that risk sits with us.
In-house wins clearly if you can hire a strong senior product designer locally, keep them fully busy, and keep them for several years. Then in-house is cheaper and the accumulated context is worth more than anything Other Land can offer. If any part of that sentence is uncertain, the embedded model is the cheaper bet.

#### How much does an embedded designer cost?

An embedded designer from Other Land is billed every four weeks, like a subscription, with a four-week minimum. The price depends on seniority and scope. Other Land shares it on a 30-minute intro call and sends a written estimate before anything starts. It covers the design director and product manager behind the designer, not one person on their own. For fewer hours, fractional support starts from 40 a month.

#### How quickly can an embedded designer start?

Usually within one to two weeks of the intro call. Setup takes one to two weeks and onboarding two to ten days. You get first drafts after that and detailed prototypes about a week later, so there is something concrete to click roughly two weeks after the designer starts.
